Ecosystem & biodiversity restoration - policy debate

From the Nature Restoration Law to the EU Biodiversity Strategy: which policy changes would help restore ecosystems while keeping agriculture, tourism and industry in balance in rural-urban territories?

Challenges identified at the first RURBANIVE policy workshop (26 May 2026), building on the Milos island restoration experience:

• Limited site-specific guidance for post-mining restoration under EU biodiversity targets.
• Complex governance across environmental and mining authorities.
• Tensions between protected Natura 2000 areas and active extraction sites.
• Insufficient funding mechanisms for restoration in active mining contexts.
