Enhanced mobility - policy debate

On-demand and smart mobility can reconnect rural areas with cities. Which EU and national policy levers matter most - TEN-T, the Sustainable & Smart Mobility Strategy, public transport funding - and what is missing for rural areas?

Challenges identified at the first RURBANIVE policy workshop (26 May 2026), building on the Trikala and Lemgo mobility work:

• Fragmented governance and limited coordination across levels.
• Uneven availability and harmonisation of mobility data.
• Constrained long-term funding, affecting the continuity of pilot initiatives.
• Slow policy uptake of innovative mobility solutions.
• Limited integration between mobility planning and broader regional development strategies.
